Menkake Gyoretsu - Japanese Mask Festival in Kamakura



On September 18th in Kamakura at the little Goryo Shrine a small but unique festival is held where the participants wear masks which are over 200 years old. The festival is known as Menkake Gyoretsu or Masked Procession. The festival is of uncertain origins but what is certain is that the shrine itself goes back to the late 11th Century. At the mountain village 瀬村 Semura there is a festival where the local people make a large mask of a Tengu and send it off to the next village in the deep mountains with music of drums and bells. The Tengu is seen as a protector of the humans and their animals. This custom lasted until the early Meiji period.

At the meat shop 天狗中田本店 Tengu Nakada Honten 
a Tengu is the protector deity of the shop.



Tengu was a "friend" of the founder on his visits to the local Izakaya bar and also familiar to the shop founder from Kurama in Kyoto. The founder 中田岩次 Nakada Iwatsugi carved a mask, put on some flashing robes and rode through the town on a horse to draw attention to his shop. At that time, eating meat was not yet very popular in Japan.
The shop was first named 天狗乃肉 Tengu no Niku, The Meat of Tengu.

On the 3rd of Nbvember, the founding day of the shop, the mask of Tengu is venerated. During the New Year celebrations, a scroll of Tengu is hung up.

村上市 Murakami

At the annual festival, children are choosen to be the アマメハギ Amamehagi. They wear masks of a Tengu or for a 獅子頭 lion dance and walk around the village from home to home, where they receive sweets.
At night they have to stay awake in the local shrine.

Amamehagiあまめはぎ
is a little male Yokai monster. He has mushrooms on his head which he uses to attack things.



(He is related to the Namahage from Ishikawa prefecture. Mizuki Shigeru has written about this Yokai.)

【天狗 てんぐ】
想像上の妖怪。深山に住み、鼻が異様に高く、山伏姿をして空を自在に飛び、神秘的な力をもつと信じられている(集英社国語辞典より)。
天狗には様々な起源、意味があり、上記のように伝えられているのは比較的近世になってからの天狗像である。
特に、「鼻が高い」=増上慢という言い換えは、江戸時代以降のもの。
もともとは山の神であり、それ以前は「天(あま)駆けるもの」=流星という意味もあった。
日本書紀には、「舒明天皇9(637)年に、奈良の都の空を大彗星が大きな音をたてて東から西へ飛んでいった」という記述がある。当時、中国留学を終えて戻ってきたばかりの僧・旻(みん)が、「流星に非ずして、是れ天狗(アマツキツネ)なり。其の吠ゆる声、雷に似たるのみ」と天皇に奏上したという。
アマツキツネは、地上に災いをもたらす凶星か獣のこととされた。

天狗がしばしば山伏の姿に見立てられるのは、修験者の驚異的な能力を畏敬したことからくる。修験者のルーツとされる役小角(えんのおづぬ=役行者・えんのぎょうじゃ)も、天狗に喩えられる。

鳥のようなくちばしを持つ烏天狗は、河童と同根、あるいは同一のものとする説もある。
いずれにせよ、天狗と山岳信仰は切っても切り離せない。
室町時代以降、全国の霊山や有力な山伏集団のいる山では、山に対する信仰心を強めるため、独自の天狗を誕生させる。日本百名山ならぬ「日本八天狗」というものもある。

鞍馬山僧正(そうじょう)坊(京都)

英彦(ひこ)山豊前(ぶぜん)坊(大分)

愛宕山太郎坊はこれら大天狗の総元締め的存在。その前身は聖徳太子の恩師・日羅だともされている。
比良山次郎坊は『今昔物語』(平安後期)にも登場。 飯綱三郎は、静岡県の秋葉(あきは)山、東京の高尾山、群馬県の迦葉(かしょう)山などの飯綱系天狗の総大将。 などなど、時代を経ると共に、仏教的な序列や意味づけなどもされていった。


【天狗経 てんぐきょう】
天狗は修験道と結びつき、密教的な要素を濃くしていく。
修験者たちが、日本全国の霊山から天狗たちを招聘するために唱えるという経文が天狗経。

「南無大天狗小天狗十二天狗有摩那(うまな)天狗数万騎天狗、先づ大天狗には、愛宕山太郎坊、妙義山日光坊、比良山次郎坊、常陸筑波法印、鞍馬山僧正坊、英彦山豊前坊、比叡山法性坊、大原住吉剣坊、横川覚海坊、越中立山縄乗坊、富士山陀羅尼坊、天岩船檀特坊、日光山東光坊、奈良大久杉坂坊、羽黒山金光坊、熊野大峰菊丈坊、吉野皆杉小桜坊、天満山三尺坊、那智滝本前鬼坊、厳島三鬼坊、高野山高林坊、白髪山高積坊、新田山佐徳坊、秋葉山三尺坊、鬼界ヶ島伽藍坊、高雄内供奉、板遠山頓鈍坊、飯綱三郎、宰府高桓高森坊、上野妙義坊、長門普明鬼宿坊、肥後阿闍梨、都度沖普賢坊、葛城高天坊、黒眷属金比羅坊、白峰相模坊、日向尾股新蔵坊、高良山筑後坊、医王島光徳坊、象頭山金剛坊、紫尾山利久坊、笠置山大僧正、伯耆大山清光坊、妙高山足立坊、石鎚山法起坊、御嶽山六石坊、如意ヶ岳薬師坊、浅間ヶ岳金平坊、総じて十二万五千五百、所々の天狗来臨影向、悪魔退散諸願成就、悉地円満随念擁護、怨敵降伏一切成就の加持、をんあろまや、てんぐすまんきそわか、をんひらひらけん、ひらけんのうそわか」
……この経文には、全部で48の天狗が登場する。
天狗経は室町後期にはすでに存在していたらしい。

Buddhism long held that the tengu were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. Their image gradually softened, however, into one of protective, if still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests.



Tengu are associated with the ascetic practice known as Shugendō, and they are usually depicted in the distinctive garb of its followers, the yamabushi.

Raiju is the companion of Raijin, the Shinto god of lightning.
While the beast is generally calm and harmless, during thunderstorms, it becomes agitated and leaps about in trees, fields, and even buildings (trees that have been struck by lightning are said to have been scratched by Raiju's claws).

Another of Raiju's peculiar behaviors is sleeping in human navels and thus harms the person in whose belly the demon is resting. Superstitious people therefore often sleep on their stomachs during bad weather, but other legends say that Raiju will only hide in the navels of people who sleep outdoors.

Its body is composed of lightning and may be in the shape of a cat, fox, weasel, or wolf. It may also fly about as a ball of lightning (the creature might be an attempt to explain the phenomenon of lightning). It's cry sounds like thunder.

If a tree is struck by lightning and shows a scar from it, they say its was the nail of the Raiju Yokai, which tried to climb up the tree to reach the sky.

峯の中腹にある巌窟には雷神がいるといわれている。穴の付近には猫の毛のような短くて白い毛がある。雷神は子犬のような姿で、毛は狢に似ており、目の周りが黒い。鼻は細く、下唇と尾は短い。足の裏の皮は子供のように薄く、足は五本ある。冬は穴を掘って土の中ですごす。普段は弱く、人にもなれるが、雨が降ると猛々しくなるという。

ある年の暴雨の時、山から獣の死体が2つ流出した。目の大きさは犬くらい、灰色で頭は長く、尾は狐のようで、爪は鷲に似ていた。落雷のとき、木の根に爪の跡のようなものがあるのはこの獣の仕業か。明和7年閏7月伊奈郡駅科村で捕えられた雷獣も、近江国かがみ村で落雷の際に捕えられた獣も同じ姿をしていた。

Once there was a thunderbolt at 虚空蔵山 Mount Kokuzo-Yama. But Kokuzo Bosatsu caught the Yokai and told him "If you do that once again at this place, I will not let you go unpunished!"
Since that time, there has not been a thunderbolt any more.
The villagers were very pleased about it and now have a festival every year on January 13.
In other parts they also know that if you venerate Kokuzo Bosatsu, there will be no thunderbolt.

At 烏山 Mount Karasuyama there lived a strange beast, a Raiju. It looked like a mouse but was about as big as a weasel. During summer there were often holes in the mountain and this beast showed its head. When it saw a suitable cloud, this Raiju jumped on it and made its way to heaven.
Sometimes hunters went after this creature in spring, but never caught it.

Since it was such an unusual being, they thought it might be a Raiju Yokai and they put the creature in a 見世物 curiosity show.

Sosho is about 3000 years old. He lives in 岩間町愛宕山内 Mount Atagoyama.

Tengu: The Japanese Demon That's Basically a Mini-God
Tengu Abduction: Torakichi, the Edo Period Tengu Boy

Torakichi claimed he was abducted and trained by tengu. A Japanese writer, Hirata Atsutane, interrogated him about his experience and wrote a book that was published in 1822.

Tengu often abducted priests, but they would also kidnap children. Some were permanently damaged mentally by the experience. Others were delirious or unconscious for a few days before eventually recovering. Renowned folklorist Yanagita Kunio said the boys of the mountain village where he grew up, as late as the late nineteenth century, talked constantly of their fear of being stolen by tengu.

One of these boys came back much the better for it, though. Torakichi claimed he was abducted and trained by tengu. A Japanese writer, Hirata Atsutane, interrogated him about his experience and wrote a book that was published in 1822.

Hirata was a serious scholar who was deeply involved in theorizing about the properties of the other world. While some skepticism was beginning to take hold, this was a time when many people still took these legends seriously. As late as 1860, in advance of a visit by the shogun Iemochi, officials of the city of Nikko posted an official notice:

To the tengu and the other demons:
Whereas our shogun intends to visit the Nikko mausoleums next April: Now therefore, Tengu and other demons inhabiting these mountains must remove elsewhere until the shogun’s visit is concluded.


So when Hirata heard of this boy who was telling stories of living with tengu, he wasn't interested in it as folklore – he took him at his word. So much so he abducted Torakichi from another scholar who was also interested in the story.

To Torakichi, it probably didn't matter which scholar he lived with. He was a sickly child born into a poor family, and didn't have a lot of options in life. Hirata saw Torakichi as the source of a lifetime to confirm his theories, and Torakichi was fine with this arrangement.

Torakichi did an excellent job of making use of his storytelling skills to earn his keep. Hirata was interested in every mundane detail and Torakichi had them all – from how tengu made mochi to their recipe for hemorrhoid relief –
as well as the spiritual questions and the things we all want to know (what did it feel like to fly?).

Some of his stories can be explained away as dramatization of rather normal things. He told one exciting anecdote of a creature that flew down and latched onto his face – it wasn't very large, but fierce and had sharp claws. This sounds a lot like a Japanese flying squirrel. Another time, he said he was attacked by a baby dragon that tried to pull him underwater, but it sounds a lot like he'd encountered a large snake. Torakichi was a city kid so natural things may have been unfamiliar and easily misinterpreted and turned into amazing stories.

Other stories seem to be based on well-known folklore, like his tales of orangutan-like monkeys with human faces that are fond of sake – he said they made a particularly delicious liquor.

But in other cases he's just a great storyteller, skilled at making up details that would excite his audience.
Here's what he said about how it felt to fly:

"When one rises into the sky, one feels rather as though one is treading on soft cotton—it may be clouds for all I know. But as one is rushing along as though blown by the wind faster than an arrow, the only sensation one has is of a ringing sound in one’s ears. Some prefer flying high in the sky, others low, rather as some fish swim near the surface of the water, others down in the depths".

"Do you take off from a mountain peak, or the top of a tall tree?"
- - - - - "Not necessarily, You can take off from anywhere you like."
"Is it cold or hot up in the sky?"

"When you first leave the ground it gets gradually colder, but once you are past the cold pole it gets extremely hot. When you are just passing between the cold and hot regions you feel cold from your waist downwards as though you are standing in water, and burning hot above. When you get up still higher, entirely into the hot region, your hair begins to go into tight curls like those on a Buddha image. And when you get up really high you find very calm weather, with no rain or wind."


He was also good at telling Hirata what he wanted to hear, or making up great rationalizations when he didn’t. When Hirata says Torakichi’s description of a trip to the moon doesn't match what Hirata knows about the moon:

Torakichi laughed and said,
"Your theory is flawed because it’s based on information you found in a book. I don’t know about books; I speak from seeing it up close."


And here's a particularly hilarious example of Torakichi telling Hirata what he wants to hear ("my master" refers to the tengu):

Also, since I [Hirata] find it very annoying when my nose hairs grow way out of my nostrils, I keep tweezers close by me so I can readily pluck those hairs. Upon seeing this Torakichi said, "Long nose hair is a sign of long life and my master believes they should never ever be plucked. My master’s nose hair is extremely long. Five or six have grown out of both nostrils and are so long that they are indistinguishable from his moustache. The master takes great care of that nose hair."

Torakichi's story has an ironic ending:
After Hirata lost interest in him, Torakichi eventually found another way to earn his keep: as a Buddhist priest.

Mount Myokosan used to be called 越の中山 Koshi no Nakayama (Mountain in the Middle of the Koshi region), with the Chinese characters
Nakayama 名香山. The Characters 名香 were then read myookoo, 名香山 Myokosan, and hence the name given to the mountain today.

Ashitatebo is related to the Tengu from 飯縄系天狗 Izuna, and also seen as incarnations of 荼吉尼天 Dakini Ten.
He is a protector deity of the Mountain.

In Myoko Town there is a shrine 関山神社 / 關山神社 Sekiyama Jinja dedicated to the first priest who climbed the mountain in 708 and founded the shrine:


裸行上人 Ragyo Shonin "the naked saint"
a monk who came from China around 350 and practised austerities near the rivers and waterfalls of Japan.
He even went to Kumano and the 那智滝 waterfall of Nachi. He was active in bringing the Kumano belief to the mountain region of Myokosan.
(Other sources state more than one "naked saint" to bring the Kumano belief to other parts of Japan.)
Since Ragyo was always naked during his austerity practise, he got this name.

He was later deified as 関山権現 Sekiyama Gongen.

The mountain itself became related to the Paradise of Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀如来の浄土.
At the top of the mountain is a hall with Amida in the middle and 観音 Kannon and 勢至 Seishi at his side.

Sekiyama Jinja is also related to the temple 妙高山雲上寺宝蔵院 Myokosan Unjo-Ji Hozo-In.

Since a Tenma Tengu comes from a path of Buddhism, he can not enter one of the six realms of existence.

A friend of priest Myoe named Gedatsu once had visitors from the Tengudo realm at his humble abode, who told him about the dangers of leaving the Buddhist path and venturing into dangerous terrain outside it.
Myoe used to tell his disciples to study the right path of Buddhism diligently and never think of leaving it.

Jokei belonged to the 法相宗 Hosso sect of Buddhism.
He was also called 解脱房 Gedatsu Bo and 笠置寺上人 Kasagidera Shonin, the Saint from Temple Kasagidera.
He believed in Shaka Nyorai, Miroku Bosatsu, Kannon Bosatsu and 春日明神 Kasuga Myojin.
In 1205, he founded 海住山寺 Kaijusen-Ji and spread the belief in Kannon Bosatsu.
He tried to use the power of the Imperial Court to suppress the activities of 法然 Saint Honen.

The mountain is about 830 m high.
It is an important site for Shugendo, and a famous place for rock climbing.

Jōdō 杖道 Jodo literally means the way of the stick.
Shinto Muso Ryu (SMR) evolved in the castle town of Fukuoka, in the north west of the main southern island of Kyushu.
SMR is a 17th Century art that matches a practitioner equipped with a 4-shaku 2-sun 1-bu (128 cm) long stick against a swordsman. In its complete “old school” (koryu) form SMR comprises seven sets of jo kata, and several ancillary weapon sets including kenjutsu, walking stick (tanjo), sickle and chain (kasuirgama), war fan (tessen) and other arts besides.
It was founded by Musō Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi, a master swordsman of the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu who embarked on warriors quest (musa shugyo), travelling Japan, looking for opponents to duel.
SMR tradition relates that he met Miyamoto Musashi (possibly in Edo) suffering his only defeat to the two sword (Nito) technique. Following this he travelled seeking answers to the juji-dome block.
At Mount Homan in Kyushu,
above the castle town of Fukuoka he spent 37 days meditating and training – and received a revelation from the Tengu (long-nosed winged demons, famous as the source of several martial traditions) to take the round pole and place it on the water of the moon (Water Moon, or Suigetsu, is the Japanese word used in budo to indicate the solar plexus on the human body).

The “demon”
in the title story refers to the mythical tengu, who guard the secrets of swordsmanship. A swordsman travels to Mt. Kurama, famous for being inhabited by tengu, and in a series of conversations he learns about mushin (no-mind), strategy, the transformation of chi, and how the path of the sword leads to the understanding of life itself.
The author, Issai Chozanshi,
had a deep understanding of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto, as well as insight into the central role of chi in the universe—points that are succinctly explained in William Scott Wilson’s fine introduction and extensive endnotes. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to truly understand the philosophical underpinnings of martial arts, and how these principles relate to our existence.

The story revolves around a young would-be swordsman who ventures into the deep woods to seek the instruction of the tengu, the mythical bird-men of Japan who were said to have instructed the legendary hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune in the ways of warfare. Coming across a group of them holding a discussion in a tree, he settles in to eavesdrop and benefit from their wisdom. The title is somewhat of a misnomer-tengu aren’t demons in the Western sense of the word (that being malevolent beings or spirits from Hell) but more like ‘forest spirits’. Wilson here chooses to break “The Demon’s Sermon” into several parts and use it as a framework to structure the shorter stories. This allows the short stories to reinforce and expand upon the concepts brought up by the tengu, as well as letting the tengu introduce the concepts to be spotlighted in the short stories.
An interesting choice by Wilson, it helps to tie the work together as a unified whole rather than a series of stories. Many of the ideas are the same as those looked at by Musashi in “Five Rings”, again showing how Buddhist and Confucian ideals found their way into sword training. The tengu discuss the concept of no-mind or emptiness, using your chi (the energy that flows through everything) correctly, the importance of practice and discipline, and how adaptability and lack of attachment are vital.
Humorously, the tengu also find most martial arts schools to be lacking in their instruction with too great an emphasis on rigid technique.

. ushi oni, ushioni, gyuuki 牛鬼 "bull-demon" - Introduction .



A well-known ushi-oni is a massive, brutal sea-monster which lives off the coast of Shimane Prefecture and other places in Western Japan and attacks fishermen. It is often depicted with a spider- or crab-like body. This ushi-oni seems to be connected to another monster called the nure-onna濡れ女 / 濡女 , who sometimes appears before an ushi-oni attack and tricks the victim into holding her child, which then becomes a stone stuck to the person's hands and grows heavier in order to hinder escape.
In Iwami Ginzan (Shimane) the story goes on about a young samurai who held the heavy stone baby.
A famous sword in his family suddenly flew into the sky, cut off the head of the demon and cut the body into nine pieces.

If it rains for a long time in Shimane, the Ushioni starts to show up under bridges. Once a man passed a bridge and saw a white light flickering there. After he had passed the bridge the flickering kept hovering around him. People in the neighbourhood who saw this thought the Ushi-Oni was the reason for it.
Another word for this monster in local dialect is
オシミ (牛鬼) oshimi (ushioni) .
The more people try to get rid of the flickering by shaking their sleeves, the more it clings to them. To get rid of it one has to get some urin on the hands and splatter that around.

Nure-onna濡女 "Wet Woman" was a dragon with a snake's body and a woman's head.
She was typically seen while washing her hair on a riverbank and would sometimes kill humans when angered.

Once a man went fishing in the evening, when the Nure-Onna appeared. She gave him a baby to hold and disappeared. He threw the baby away and fled, but Ushi-Oni came right after him. He managed to take shelter in a farmer's house and was safe.

知夫郡 Chibu district知夫村 Chibu village

Once a brave man was on his way to 伊勢神宮 Ise Shrine with a lot of money for offerings, but an Oni in the form of the 庚申 Koshin Deity took all his money away. But it was just a wicked person clad like Koshin. When the Deity heard the story, he hurried to give the money back to the brave man.

Fishermen at the coast are often called Yasha 夜叉 Demons in the local dialect.

Once upon a time in the land of Iwami
there lived a samurai named 森山玄蔵 Moriyama Genzo, who liked to go fishing at night.

むかしむかし、石見の国(いわみのくに→島根県)に、森山玄蔵(もりやまげんぞう)という侍がいました。
玄蔵は大変な釣り好きで、ひまさえあると、釣りに出かけます。
さて、ある夏の事、玄蔵は夕方から磯へと夜釣りに出かけました。
その日はどうしたわけか、次から次へと魚が釣れる日で、またたく間に、びくの中は魚でいっぱいになりました。
「こんなに釣れるとわかっていたら、もっとでっかいびくを持ってくるんだったな」
これ以上は釣っても持って帰れないので、玄蔵が引き上げようとしたら、後ろにだれか立っていました。
「おや?」
と、振り向いてみると、だれもいません。
「おかしいな」
そう思って、もう一度前に向き直ったら、なんと目の前の海に、ずぶぬれの女が赤ん坊を抱いて立っているのです。
月の光に照らされた顔は、まるで死人のように青白です。
玄蔵は逃げ出そうとしましたが、足がひきつり、動く事が出来ません。
女は、まるで海の上を歩くようにして、玄蔵のそばにやってきた。
そして、ぞっとするほど冷たい声で言いました。
「すみません。この子が、お腹をすかせて困っています。どうか、魚を一匹やってくださいな」
「や、や、やるとも」
玄蔵は震える手で、釣りあげたばかりの魚を女に手渡しました。
そして女が、その魚を赤ん坊に持たせるとどうでしょう。
赤ん坊は、いきなり魚の頭にかぶりつき、骨ごとバリバリと、またたく間に食べてしまったのです。
「すみません。もう一匹」
玄蔵は、びくごと女にわたしました。
すると赤ん坊は、バリバリ、ムシャムシャ、ペチャペチャと、口のまわりを血だらけにして、びくの中の魚を一匹残らずたいらげてしまったのです。
あまりの恐ろしさに、玄蔵は、もう気絶しそうです。
「すみませんが、ちょっとこの子を抱いてくれませんか?」
玄蔵は嫌がりましたが、女は玄蔵に赤ん坊を無理矢理おしつけたかと思うと、すうっと海の中に消えてしまいました。
玄蔵は、あわてて赤ん坊を投げようとしましたが、赤ん坊は胸にしっかりとしがみついて、どうやっても離れてくれません。
「とにかく、ここを逃げ出さなくては」
玄蔵は赤ん坊を抱いたまま、夢中で駆け出しました。
そしてようやく岩場を抜けて海辺の道へ出たとき、後ろから、ひづめの音が近づいてきました。
「あっ、牛鬼!」
ふりかえった玄蔵の前に、鬼の顔をした牛の化け物が、角をふりかざしながらやってきます。
「だ、だれか~!」
玄蔵は、声をふりしぼって叫びました。
そのころ玄蔵の家では、奥さんが一人で留守番をしていました。
座敷の方から、ガタガタと、おかしな音がするので、中をのぞいてみると、主人が大切にしている床の間の刀が、一人であばれているのです。
「これはもしや、主人の身に、何かあったにちがいない」
気の強い奥さんが表の戸を開けて外へ出ようとしたら、床の間の刀がさやから抜けて、矢の様に飛び出して行きました。
刀は空に舞い上がると、そのまま海辺にむかって一直線に飛んでいきます。
「どうか、主人をお守りください」
奥さんは、刀に向かって手を合わせました。
そのとき玄蔵は牛鬼に追いつめられ、するどい角でいまにもひと突きにされようとしていました。
「もうだめだ!」
玄蔵が思わず目をつむった瞬間、
「ぎゃあ!」
目の前で、ものすごい叫び声がしました。
それと同時に、玄蔵の胸から赤ん坊が落ちました。
恐る恐る目を開けてみると、牛鬼の首に、自分の刀が突き刺さっているではありませんか。
「助かった」
玄蔵は腰が抜けて、その場にへなへなと座り込んでしまいました。
次の朝、玄蔵が村人たちと一緒に昨日の海辺へ来てみると、牛鬼も赤ん坊の姿もなく、血の跡が、てんてんと海まで続いていたそうです。
ぬれ女とは海の岩場に住むお化けで、必ず、牛鬼を連れて現れるという事です。

鹿足郡 Kanoashi district日原村 Nichihara village

On the evening of Setsubun the 出雲に鬼 demons of Izumo come out. The God of Izumo sits on his bronze horse and drives them away with his bow and arrow.
On this day the people of Izumo do not go outside to see him.
Once a curious old hag peeked out from a small hole, but the Deity saw her and hit her eye with his arrow.

那賀郡 Naka district浅利村 Asari village (Present day 江津市浅利町)

Once upon a time the local Shrine priest went fishing in the evening, when the Nure-Onna gave him a baby to hold. He tried to throw it away, but it stuck to his hands. Finally Ushi-Oni came running after him. The priest run for his life, but suddenly he saw a white flash of light hitting the head of the Ushi-Oni. Later he understood that it was the sword from his Shrine that had come to his rescue.

迩摩郡 Nima district

Once an old man took his small fishing boat and went out at night. An Ushi-Oni came after him, but he caught the demon and tried to birng him to his home. But near his fishing hut the Ushi-Oni fled. A young man who was watching tried to hit the Ushi-Oni and managed to cut off its head. But when they looked closer it was just 椿の古根 an old root of a 椿の古根 tsubaki camellia tree.

- - - Some researchers say the real origin of this monster is a root of a camellia tree (tsubaki no ne).
This tree is sacred in many parts of Japan. Ushi-Oni is in fact a local deity turned demon.
Camellia trees grow in many parts along the beaches and peninsulars, being brought there by the waves of the sea. Camellia flowers blossom at the border to the other world.

The local people here never have a wedding ceremony on the Koshin day.
They say a child conceived on the Koshin day will either become a Demon Child or 蛇の子 the child of a serpent.

Oni No Shitaburui is a valley in the midstream of Omaki River.

There is a legend explaining the origin of the name of the place.
Once upon a time, a small shark (wani ワニ) fell in love with a princess living in a village, and visited the village every day over the Sea of Japan. The princess felt sick of this and stemmed the water with a large rock to stop the shark, but the shark continued to admire the princess. It is said that the current name is a corruption of wani no shita buru (meaning the shark in love).

On both sides of the valley are steep cliffs, and the rows of massive, peculiarly-shaped rocks are a spectacular sight. There is a dam downstream, and you can enjoy fishing. The barrier-free walking path is suitable for wheelchairs and baby strollers. The Izumo area is a land of myths. Imagine the ancient days in the freely-growing trees forming a scene like a virgin forest of the primeval age.

大原郡 Ohara district 阿用郷 (アヨ)Ayo village (now 大東町 Daito town)

This is maybe the oldest mention of an ONI in Japanese records.



Once upon a time
there lived a wild demon, who was very large and had only one eye. He appeared in the fields and when the farmers were busy, he took away their child and begun to eat it. The farmer and his wife hid in the bamboo forest in great fear and could not do anything to help. They trembled and the bamboo swayed, making quite a sound. When the child heard the sound, it begun to shout "
「アヨ、アヨ(動いたよ、動いたよ)」 Ayo! Ayo! (It's moving.)
This is how the region became its name.

This legend is mentioned in the Izumo Fudoki:

the inhabitants of the Central Land who are not subjugated "ashiki," or evil gods. In Izumo fudoki, a one-eyed A appears in a reclaimed land in the community of Ayo of Izumo Province (present-day Shimane prefecture) and devours a man (Akimoto 238-39).
Komatsu Kazuhiko writes,
"People who had different customs or lived beyond the reach of the emperor's control" were considered some form of oni ("Supernatural Apparitions and Domestic Life in Japan" 3). This concept is actually not unique to Japan.
Targets of subjugation and different ethnic groups that do not assimilate the precepts of hegemonic authority are described as %, by the Han race even before the period of Six Dynasties (220-589) in China (Li 427). It is not certain, however, whether the character, was pronounced as oni or mono. Indeed, the character is rendered as mono in Man'yoshu (Ten Thousand Leaves, ca. eighth century).
There exists no definitive example of the term"on" in the ancient literature (Tsuchihashi 94-95).

Once a farmer did not give a sweet persimmon to Kobo Daishi as he passed by on his pilgrimage. So the venerable Daishi turned the tree into 渋柿 bitter persimmons to teach the farmer a lesson.

Once upon a long, long LONG time - 昔の昔のその昔ずーっと昔のその又其昔
There lived a family of four in a poor man's house. When the mother had gone out, a 鬼婆 Onibaba Demon Hag changed her features to look like mother, came inside and ate the baby. The two other elder children saw it and tried to run away in fear. From heaven a chain came down to let the children escape, but when the Onibaba tried to grab the chain, it wound around her neck and strangled her to death.

Once upon a time, the bottom of the 阿蘇の盆地 Plain of Aso was a lake.
A demon tried to fill the lake with earch and carried earth to the place, but he broke the pole of his carrier. The earth fell down and this became 上萩岳 Upper Ogidake mountain and下萩岳 Lower Ogidake mountain.



The Demon became angry and pressed against the boulder 不動岩 Fudo-Iwa but could not move it. Since that time, there are the remains of the demon's head, back and both hands on the boulder.

There is also boulder in the form of a bridge. Legend knows that once upon a time, a Demon had to built it in one night, but when the cock crowed, the bridge was not finished and . . .

鬼が一夜で造った石段  A demon made the stone stairs in just one night

Once the Kami deity wanted to drive out the demon so that humans could live in the region. He told the demon to count to 100 until the cock was crowing.
The demon counted fast and was already at 99, when the deity hit a 箕 winnow and imitated the sound of a cock. So the demon had to leave the region.



Another version
tells that the oni was asked to built a staircase with 100 steps and built 100 houses, but the demon could not finish before the cock crowed.
This is the Tsukahara densetsu 塚原伝説 Tsukahara legend.

The elder brother of Raiko, 美女丸 Bijomaru,
took the sword and became quite wild. His father 源光仲 Mitsunaka ordered 藤原仲光 Fujiwara no Nakamitsu to kill Bijomaru, but Nakamitsu killed his own son instead and presented it to Bijomaru. Bijomaru finally changed his wild ways and became a monk at 比叡山 Hieizan.

There is a tragic tale told of Shodoji Temple located in Nishiuneno.
Minamoto-no-Mitsunaka, who was the Lord of Settsu and the person who built Tada-In (Tada Shrine) in the 10th century, sent his son, Bijomaru, to Nakayamadera Temple (Takarazuka City, to receive training to become a Buddhist priest. Bijomaru, however, spent all his time playing martial arts, and was not serious at all in his training to become a priest.
One day, when Bijomaru became 15 years old, his father, Mitsunaka asked him how much progress he made in his training. When Mitsunaka realized that Bijomaru could not read Buddhist scriptures, nor compose a tanka (a 31-syllable Japanese poem) nor play music, he became furious and ordered his chief vassal, Nakamitsu Fujiwara, to kill Bijomaru by cutting his head.
Nakamitsu was in big difficulties, since he could not take the life of a son of his lord.
As Kojumaru, one of the sons of Nakamitsu, knew the plight of his father, he told his father to kill him instead. Nakamitsu found Kojumaru join his hands in prayer, and close his eyes. Holding back his tears, Nakamitsu slew his son, and let Bijomaru secretly go off to Mount Hiei (Shiga Prefecture).
Bijomaru later found out what had happened, and devoted himself to ascetic practices to become a priest. He became a high-ranking priest, called Genken-sozu, and built Shodoji Temple to enshrine the spirit of Kojumaru.
The temple of this legend is highlighted by ever-changing scenery of the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring to vibrant yellows and reds in autumn.

... about Minamoto no Yorimitsu (raiko) and his father Mitsunaka ...
... until 1068 this family was 摂関 Sekkan (Sesshō+Kampaku), after it was Go-Sanjō-tennō (71th) and they took back the dictature until 1185
- anyway it means they were the highest level in the hierarchy
and the Minamoto-shi was Chinjufu-shōgun (so kokushi) meaning vassal of all the people of Fujiwara-shi.
So as the nippon-no-rekishi is very complex, this story is tricky, as a Fujiwara cannot be in the service of a Minamoto.

Niigata, 松之山町 Matsunoyama
The serpent wanted the princess of the pond 蒲生池 / 蒲生の池 Kamo-no-ike as his bride. But the Nakodo was refused. In his anger he killed all the members of the family.
He borrowed the famous serpent-cutting sword Hebikirimaru蛇切丸 and fought with the enemy.

kumo kirimaru 蜘蛛切丸 spider cutter, spider-killing sword

The sword Kimaru, Onimaru鬼丸 used to kill the Tsuchigumo monster 土蜘蛛退治.
This sword is also called Hizamaru (膝丸)

There are various theories to the story of the tsuchigumo, and in the Heike Monogatari, there is as following (they were written as 山蜘蛛).
When Yorimitsu suffered from malaria, and lay on a bed, a strange monk who was 7 shaku (about 2.1 meters) tall appeared, released some rope, and tried to capture him. Yorimitsu, despite his sickness, cut him with his famous sword, the Hizamaru (膝丸), causing the monk to flee. The next day, Yorimitsu led his Four Guardian Kings to chase after the blood trail of the monk, and arrived at a mound behind shrine Kitano jinja where there was a large spider that was 4 shaku wide (about 1.2 meters). Yorimitsu and the others caught it, pierced it with an iron skewer, and exposed it to a riverbed. Yorimitsu's illness left him immediately, and the sword that cut the spider was from then on called the Kumo-kiri (蜘蛛切り, spider-cutter).
The true identity of this tsuchigumo was said to be an onryō of the aforementioned local clan defeated by Emperor Jimmu.
This tale is also known from the very fifth noh, "Tsuchigumo."

Onimaru is one of the 'Tenka-goken', the five famous swords of Japan.
Its legend is about an ogre which made Hojyo Tokiyori, 5th regent in Kamakura era, suffer from nightmares. One night, he saw a dream of an old man, who turned out to be a spirit of the katana. After following the his advice in real world, the katana fell down and cut down the silver decoration of an ogre.
Since then, he never saw a nightmare again.
Imperial Household Agency is currently keeping this Onimaru. Unfortunately, it has only been displayed three times.

kishin 鬼神 "Demon Deity"

Once Fujiwara no Chikata used his four Demon Deities to haunt travellers in the region.
But Tamuramaro came to punish him.

This is the castle of Fujiwara no Chikata, who appears in the Taiheiki, or Records of Great Peace.



In the Heian Period, noble family Fujiwara no Chikata started war with the imperial court, used the
yonki (four devils: kinki 金鬼 gold devil, fuuki 風鬼 wind devil, suiki 水鬼 water devil,
ongyoki 隠形鬼 / 怨京鬼 stealth devil)

to distress the imperial armies.
The waka poem of Kinotomo, who had come to put down Fujiwara no Chikata, said
“All things, whether grass or tree, are ruled by the Emperor,
and not even a devil can turn his back to the Emperor and live in this land”

to disperse the four devils and Fujiwara no Chikata was defeated. The four devils are said to have been the original archetype for ninja. The Chikata monument was built in 1760, and commemorates Fujiwara no Chikata and Wakamiya deities.

kijin 鬼人 "human demon"

Once upon a time
King Ashoka (阿育王 Aiku-O) from India asked a human demon to throw three rocks to 琵琶湖 lake Biwako in Japan.
This is the beginning of an island called Shiraishi 白石島 "white stone island".

There are now four rocks, sticking out from about 80 meters below the water level.
Now a favorite resting place for birds, which turned the rocks white from bird droppings.

At the shrine 綿向神社 Watamuki Jinja there is an ema 絵馬 votive tablet of a half-naked woman, only clad in koshimaki腰巻 waste wrapper, and an Oni with only a fundoshi褌1丁 male underware doing a bout of 相撲 sumo wrestling.

Umamioka Watamuki Shrine at the foot of Mt. Watamuki in Hino Town, Shiga Prefecture, is a historic shrine founded in 545. The enshrined deities are Amenohonohi no Mikoto, Amenohinadori no Mikoto and Takemikumaushi no Mikoto.
It was originally founded at the top of Mt. Watamuki and was transferred to the present place in 796.
The spring festival of the shrine
"Hino Festival” held on May 2 to 4 every year is the most gorgeous festival on the eastern side of Lake Biwa. The festival dates back to 1170, since when ancient rituals and customs have been passed down to the present time.
On the main festival day on May 3,
a lot of Shinto rites are performed in traditional ways. The highlight is the parade with the 3 holy children and the guarding attendants in samurai costumes in the lead, who are followed by a sacred horse, shrine priests and the 3 mikoshi from the attached shrines and sumptuous 16 festival floats, which were donated by wealthy Omi merchants about 130 to 200 years ago. The festival is prefecturally designated as an intangible cultural property.

At the temple 明王院 Myo-O-In in the village of 葛川 Kuzugawa there is an ema 絵馬 votive tablet showing an aka-oni 赤鬼 red demon with white fundoshi ふんどし underpants and a waist wrapper made from 豹の毛皮 panther skin. His opponent is a huge man with strong muscles, all naked. They have a rope around the neck
kubihiki 首引き and pull in a contest of strength, a kind of "Neck tug of war".

At Karasaki there is a famous 唐崎の松 matsu pine tree.



Once it was about to wither but through the power of Waka poetry the Kishin was moved and helped it to regain its lush green color.

The kitchen entry and main pillar of the home are the KIMON.Taking the opposite direction is the ura kimon.
There in the garden you should not plant anything, because that will cause bad luck.

Once upon a time at night, 赤鬼と青鬼 the red Oni and the blue Oni were doing a bout of Sumo near a cliff.
The red Oni fell down. When the villagers looked the next morning, there was a dead human.
This must have been the bad doing of a fox.

Once upon a time a husband went hunting at night. When he came back he found that his pregnant wife had been eaten by an 鬼婆 Onibaba Hag. But she had not eaten the baby in her belly. The child grew up to become a big, strong man. He went after the Onibaba, gave her iron bullets to eat and killed her. Finally he had taken revenge at the enemy of his mother !
They say he was the ancestor of Sumo wrestlers.
And the Onibaba turned out to be a dead fox.

kubihiki 鬼の首引き neck tug of war of the demons - a special kind of Sumo



This is maybe the first children's book where 鬼の娘 the daughter of an Oni is the hero. She was supposed to have her first meal of a human 「お食い初め」and the story tells about the ruses the human, a young man, who tries to survive. He has to win a neck tug of war with many Oni.

滋賀県大津市歴博へ「大津絵展」 Exhibition of Otsu-E

The most common topics are
Demons 鬼、Buddhist Deities 仏画、beautiful ladies 美人画、famous warriors 武者絵 and others.
. Otsu Paintings 大津絵 Otsu-E - Introduction .

The name derived from the place where these paintings were sold in the Edo period, in and around the post town of Otsu, which lay on the Tokaido Road. They were welcome cheap souvenirs with a special appeal.
During the 18th century, illustrations were given a moral didactic purpose and explanatory text was introduced about the picture. Often, though, there was a satirical bite: demons were portrayed as monks on alms round,
or as taking a bath with a comment inscribed such as “Many wash the body but not the mind”.

What is “Oniko”?
Oniko means a demon in Tsugaru dialect.
Oniko, enshrined on top of a Torii gate, is worshipped in about 30 shrines over 7 cities and towns in northwest Tsugaru County. It is not clear how enshrining Oniko on Torii gate began. It is believed that Oniko were worshipped to stop flooding of Iwaki River, hence all Oniko shrines are located alongside of Iwaki River.
Religious belief associated with Oniko on Torii gates and Suiko sama have been part of life in Tsugaru County.
Many enshrined Oniko and Suiko sama are also found in Tsuruta town.

The demons are usually perched between two beams of a Shinto shrine gate 鳥居 torii and seem to support it with all their might.
Some look like a red on blue (green) oni 赤鬼 青鬼, others like Sumo wrestlers or Yamabushi mountain priests.

The Oni-ko of Onizawa 鬼沢, by Joshua Solomon
I recently visited the town of Onizawa, a short drive from my apartment in the provincial city of Hirosaki, to visit the local shrines. Many of the shrines there are distinctive because the torii gates are decorated with carved wooden Oni (or Oni-ko in local parlance), the red ogre-like demons from which the town gets its name. These small shrines are scattered throughout the village, tucked away between rice fields, alongside the riverbank, behind a butcher’s shop ... locating them can be half the fun.

According to Japanese geomantic beliefs, northeast is an inauspicious direction related to the kimon“Oni gateway.” The zodiac animals associated with northeast are the bull and tiger, so Oni are typically depicted as cow-horned demons with tiger fangs wearing tiger-skin loincloths. It is said that Aomori, in the northeastern region of Japan, has a particular abundance of Oni.

There is a legend in Onizawa describing a benevolent Oni, more of a mountain-man than a demon.
As the story goes, the Oni was a friend of a villager 弥十郎 Yajuro, and offered to assist in the construction of a dam to collect water for his rice paddies. He did so under the condition that no-one watched him as he worked. Naturally, the villager’s wife breaks the rule by sneaking over to spy on the Oni. The Oni runs away, never to appear again; however, he leaves in such a hurry that he forgets all of his tools. The metal remains of these massive ogre-sized tools — a saw, an ax, a hoe, etc — are now collected and displayed at the Oni shrine in Onizawa.

There are many other stories like these scattered throughout the prefecture, forming a part of the invisible landscape of folkloric knowledge. Nowadays, much of that knowledge has begun to fade from the local communal consciousness, and instead is preserved on blogs and tourism websites.

At that old time, Onizawa was called 「ながねはだち」Nagahagedachi.
鬼沢には他に、《鬼の腰掛け柏》や《鬼の土俵》など鬼伝説縁の場所がある
そのため、鬼沢の住人は今でも節分の日に豆をまかない・端午の節句にヨモギや菖蒲を屋根にのせないことを習慣にしている家庭が多い。鬼沢では、鬼が神様なのである。
鬼の正体には、田村麻呂に追われ岩木山麓に隠れ住んだ落武者であるとか、卓越した製鉄技術、潅漑技術を持っていることなどから、大陸から漂着した渡来人ではないか、という説もあるが、定かではない。

A 木こり forest worker became friends with an Ohito and they often enjoyed 相撲 Sumo wrestling together. When the forest worker won a bout, the Ohito carried a lot of firewood bundles to his home during the night. After many times of winning, the forest worker eventually also became an Ohito and was not seen in the village again.
